10 Things About Gabe Kavan

In an effort to diagnose the trend of eccentric characters here and their sometimes erratic behaviors, we at Steamroller decided to meet some of these personalities, jot down a few quick Q&As, and just try to get a handle on the creative mess we have fostered here at the Studio.

Let’s get this going with the usual: who are you?

My name is Gabriel Kavan, I’m from Michigan and I love unicorns and heavy music! I work here on Deadwood as a programmer. We all wear many hats on the Deadwood team, and one of my favorite things to work on is the user interface.

Who inspires you and why?

I’d like to say Bob Ross for his perpetual encouragement that can apply even outside of painting. He’s an amazing painter and a great inspiration to just follow your dreams even if you aren’t good at it, because the more you do it and apply yourself the better you become.

I’m not going to tell you that Bob Ross was more of a skilled craftsman than a painter but ehhhh…opinions and all that. Let’s continue…What’s the coolest thing you’re working on right now?

I work on our in-house IP, Deadwood.

What do you like about it?

I love the team I work with. We’re all a merry, zany bunch and I couldn’t feel more at home. We all have good fun together and we’re pushing to make a game that is just as lovable as we can be.

What are you passionate about?

Music and Overwatch. I take that game a little too seriously sometimes, but all in good fun. And music all day, everyday.

What’s your favorite movie?

Nightmare Before Christmas

Do you have any hobbies?

Gaming (Duh), and I, uh, collect unicorn items.

How do you recharge?

A good weekend spent playing games with friends, or alone watching T.V.

(Living the dream here)

So basically you recharge from what you do by doing what you do…normally…I guess that works? What would you be doing if you weren’t at your current job?

Living in a cardboard box under a bridge somewhere in California. I’m just kidding. I think I’d be applying myself at home more, like making a personal game and expanding on my programming languages knowledge. And applying for some studios I’ve always wanted to work for.

Word…because this clearly is NOT the place you’ve always wanted to work for, hahahaha!

You like music a lot from the Steamroller Spotify Playlist…What songs have you completely memorized?

I have a lot, of all of the above. But some favorites;

Underoath – Writing on the walls

Say anything – Woe

My Chemical Romance – Helena

Five Iron Frenzy – On Distant Shores

And I know the Disney Robin Hood line for line, as well as Nightmare Before Christmas.

I memorize a lot of my favorite bands’ songs.

I would ask you for a motto but I think the banner above your desktop speaks for itself:
