Samuel Dean Beatty
Game Designer / Web Designer
Dear Hiring Manager,
This letter is to express my interest in working, interning or working for future profits. In May 2017, I am graduating from Columbia College Chicago with a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Game Design, with a minor in Web Design.
Being cross trained in multiple areas, I believe will be beneficial to Steamroller. In addition, after streaming for several years, I have matured from a gamer to an analyst of what players want in a storyline and will use these combined experiences to design games that have the correct balance, player reward and most of all, enjoyment factor. Technically, I have been trained to scrutinize the skeleton of a game’s mechanics and know how to obtain logical flow and consistency from creation to the final product. I have developed expertise in the frequently used building tools of video game development, especially Unity (including creating multiple 2D and 3D), C#, Flash, Java, and Maya. My experience in QA testing includes working in my Game classes at Columbia College Chicago, for fellow developers who are working on producing Indie games, and of course on my own games. I have been the lead QA for classmates that were making their final senior game project. In this role I took the responsibility to make a QA test plan, held team testing sessions and used the management program Hansoft to organize the data and enter concise documentation. Finally, my personality is inherently qualified to design games for a variety of genres because I have a mind full of visions, game play features and other seemingly meaningless knowledge that will add to the creative process of designing game. Admittedly, I do not have professional experience but I am a fast and committed learner. In addition, with my Web design minor I am cross trained in HTML5, CSS2.1, PHP5+, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Illustrator and currently work as a web and social media assistant in Chicago.
Outside of my college and work related experiences; I have studied Spanish and had a web design internship in Mexico, plus streamed bilingual. My fluency is an intermediate proficiency and my cultural and language experiences will greatly benefit my ability to contribute to the team.
I am an avid gamer and designer which gives me extra understanding for the need to clearly and tactfully communicate. Building a great game takes teamwork, not egos and I will humbly admit I do not have AAA experience but what I do have is passion for this industry and the dedication to being a cooperative learner and member of the team. Steamroller Studios is very attractive to me by the way you present yourselves as quality people who value relationships.
I will do the best of my ability to deliver excellent results as an intern and as many of you have done, I am willing to intern unpaid and will get an evening and weekend job elsewhere. Unassisted relocation is not an issue for me being that I am single and own virtually nothing. I look forward to discussing this position with you further.
